ISSUE #004

Here at Fergs Kayaks we're looking forward to summer. Having just cleared out of last years stock in our Sale (well done any of you who now proudly own one of our kayaks) and welcoming the Bic Kayak range to our stores, we're getting geared up for many hours spent out on the water.
Get into the spirit of a kayaking summer by going on the Guy Fawkes Kayak Trip in Wellington, or prepare yourself for one of the many multisport events about to start on the calender.
Always stay safe and have a great time on the water!

Ferg

Product of the Month

So you're another kiwi who loves a good summer holiday near the water. But man are you over having to haul your kayak down to the water's edge! It would be so much easier if you could roll it down there. Well before you start creating difficult rolling devices let us show you this awesome kayak trolley.

Built to go off-road it has big, hardy wheels that can handle to toughest terrain and still zoom across the sand easy as. Strap one end of your kayak to the trolley and you can manuoevre it to the waters edge with ease. We love this particular kayak trolley because it can be used anywhere, it easy to use and doesn't weight a ton. More on the C-Tug Trolley>>

Guy Fawkes Kayak Tour

The inaugral Wellington Guy Fawkes trip is creeping up on us again. This amazing experience can be yours if you pre-book from now. Previously sold out, it promises to be a spectacular evening of kayaking, eating and boy will the sparks fly!

Starting out from Fergs Kayaks, everyone gets kitted out and put in a sturdy double sea kayak. Lights are attached to the back of the kayak and the tour starts out across the harbour and around the bays to a secluded spot, where a classic kiwi fish and chip dinner awaits on the beach. After everyone has had their fill, we launch the kayaks again and paddle back into the bay where we raft the boats up and lie out underneath the starry sky and the amazing fireworks show right above us. There's no other seat like it!

Saturday 4th November

Cost is $75 per person all inclusive and there are limited seats so you must book early. Click here for more info>>

Al's Top 10

Alan Ferguson, manager of Fergs Racing, brings us his top 10 must-have's for Multisport equipment:

1)      I-rule Torpedoes
These things are awesome, imagine a pair of shorts that will let you run, ride and paddle in complete comfort, I personally don’t want to be caught up in transitions and like to slide around a bit on my seat with a little padding and these shorts definitely deliver!

2)      Helly Hansen Lifa
I no longer use anything else since I discovered Lifa, super breathable, super comfy and super style.

3)      Optic Nerve Axis goggles
These are my favourite sunnies for paddling. What more could you want! They beat other glasses because they have heaps of ventilation and a rubber thingy to keep them off my face so they don’t fog up, plus a head strap that keeps them on when I end up counting fish.

4)      I-rule In-vest
In my opinion this vest with Lifa is the ultimate race day combo. I have found it keeps me cool when I’m on my way to building up a sweat and thankfully keeps the wind off my chest when I’ve upped the speed. I especially like the fact it has a full length zip that lets me vent when things are getting too hot. I use it a lot in the summer months.

5)      Storm Sacks
I no longer use anything else. These race weight dry bags by Sealline are light and very packable for all those items I don’t want to get wet. They’ve been around a few years but they’ve proven to me to be the best.

6)      Foot Pumps
It’s inevitable that a bit of water is going to get in the boat but I’m always aware that I want my boat to be as close to build weight as possible. I’ve made a foot pump an essential item to carry on board during long days at sea, and I’d definitely consider it essential equipment for the Wild Moa in Rotorua.

7)      Hydraulics Race-Pro
This is my favourite low profile competition PFD. It has all the bits and pieces needed for racing and training. Bladder pocket and tube directors, key clip, drink bottle holder, 2 large mesh pockets for food etc., a knife/gel pocket, webbing to attach a light to on the back, reflective piping, and to top it all off a super quick adjustment system that gets my PFD on so quick transitions are a breeze.  I customized the fit on mine and now I hardly notice I’m wearing a PFD.

8)      Cramp-Stop
Who likes cramp? Not me! This stuff works, its Homeopathic, so all natural. I recommend it as a must for all endurance athletes as a preventative measure, and very quick remedy for cramp. I suffer from leg cramps after about an hour on rides and was very pleasantly surprised at just how well this works.  Get it and use it!

9)      SPT Lockable Tie downs
I wish these had been around Christmas ’01, you see it was Christmas Eve and the last day of my honeymoon. I woke up to find my 8 week old play boat was no longer on the roof of my car, even though the car could not be seen from the street. Gutted! Now if these lockable tie downs had been in existence then I might still have my sub7 around. Ingenious tie downs with steel cables running through the webbing to stop thieves cutting your Kayak off the roof and the cam buckle is lockable so the only thing you need to worry about is where you left your damn keys?

10)  Pro-tec Ace Wake Helmet
Being a hot head I have always had issues racing in helmets but with all the vents in this helmet I have been more comfortable on the water than for a long time. CE EN 1385 rated for safety, 15 ventilation holes, a full surround multi density liner for impact protection and the added stability of the rear headlock system means my head is nice and safe when the unthinkable happens.

Meet the Staff...

He's been working for Fergs Kayaks for many years now, getting the part-time hours in while studying and now moving into the position of Manager of Fergs Kayaks' Auckland store. Aaron Carpenter has also been a mad keen kayaker all this time. Training with Ferg's Elite Kayak Squad and competing in surf lifesaving events.

Aaron has a great wealth of knowledge about kayaks and especially the ones that are made to go fast. His job now has him overseeing the business of Fergs Kayaks in Auckland but never one to slouch around you'll often find him selling a boat or teaching a kayak class.

In his spare time Aaron keeps on training, and is quite the fan of National radio.
